The last flight out: we are now alone.

We are now alone. The last flight out occurred on our Tuesday March 6th at 6:30 pm. It is about a week late. Traditionally all the winterovers gather at the Chalet for a champagne toast then a flyover from the last plane. We saw the plane taxi and take off but it kept going. We were all so dissappointed. For some reason the pilot chose not to do a flyover. Maybe it was because he had just landed 40 minutes earlier from the 5 hour Christchurch flight and had another 5 hours back.

We are now one big happy 152 person family. I look forward to the next 6 months when we are plunged into darkness and the great winter storms of Antarctica. I feel like we have been marooned on a distant planet and the next supply spaceship won't return until mid-August.

The Chalet.

Waiting for the last flight to take off.

A toast and speech by the station director (dark jacket left of the 2nd flagpole from the left) to our new family.

The plane has taken off but why is it flying away?

The chefs made a delicious cake of McMurdo. The "Go Away" is meant for the last plane load of summer people. We winterovers were anxious to be on our own.

Another nice dinner - roast turkey, yams, salad, and mixed berries.

  1. Have you met everybody? BTW RoadRider = Andy Messina. It looks like food is fine and you could gain a pound or two quite easily if you don't watch out. We just switched to Daylight Saving Time but I bet for you it wouldn't make any difference. Later.

  2. I have met about 40 or so. There are so many non work activities where there is ample opportunity. I have noticed that some people are real loners. Time and day doesn't mean much here. I don't go to the galley at lunch. A person can get fat here. I was wondering who RoadRider was. Thanks Andy.
