After dinner we were given a tour of the the Antarctic Heritage Trust Conservatory. Captain Scott had two huts - Discovery Hut, here in McMurdo, and another at Cape Evans called Scott's Hut about 14 miles northeast of McMurdo. The Conservatory is in the process of preserving all the items inside both huts. They are currently working on the artifacts from Cape Evans. These artifacts are at Scott Base to be preserved and then placed back into the huts in their original arrangement. It is very delicate work and the conservators gave an excellent tour.
Whenever I have been at Hut Point I thought I was looking at Cape Crozier but it has been Cape Evans and Cape Royds. |
Too bad we are not allowed to play Rugby. I would have enjoyed trying it. As it stands NZ has the cup. |

Ongoing tin preservation. |
In the foreground are pieces of tin labels. Once the label is removed it is put back together while the tins are treated to stop the rust and sealed. The label is then put back on the tin. |

They don't look very warm. |
All this is so fascinating to a history buff like me. |

Cool cigarette tin. It was empty. |
After 100 years the mousetrap is still the same. |
I don't think this boot was made in Korea. If the sole comes loose just use more nails. |
Not a very comfortable pillow and very small. |
After the tour we stopped at the Pub for a few beers. Fun Times.

Two new beers I tasted. And the Antarctic Edition! |
Nice money wall. Thanks for the close ups!
ReplyDeleteThanks for all your comments Cary. I figured there are lots of pictures on this blog to give you some ideas.
DeleteYou are the history buff, but I am the one who cherishes the words and pictures. Keep posting these awesome tributes to explorers and wanderers. Cary and Jocelyn will follow in your footsteps. I am too predictable. Enjoy every moment! Love always, andee
ReplyDeleteThanks. The history is amazing. I just started a new book called "The Worst Journey in the World" written by one of Scott's men in 1922. Free on my Kindle.
DeleteMiss You.
