This was my 3rd Sunday here and the first decent weather to take a hike. I wanted to hike up Observation Hill but it was too cloudy for that so I chose to hike the round trip to Scott Base of 3.8 miles. It was not very far but there are two steep grades which required some effort. Fortunately there wasn't any wind. It was pleasant with just distant sounds of ice cracking and seals barking. The temperature was a pleasant -4 degrees F.
There has been a request to include more pictures with me in them. On the road to Scott Base. |
The Ross Ice Shelf. |
Yes, I am here. |
Observation Hill. |
The water temperature of McMurdo Sound is in the 30's. When It drops to the mid 20's it freezes. There is some fog coming off the sound. |

Nice surf line up! |
Breaking waves! |
A McMurdo van on the way to the ice runway. |
You can still see the van. No traffic today. |

A Kiwi Hagglund on the way to work. Notice the large GPS antenna. |
More seals. Not much more to take pictures of in the animal department. |
Pretty blue. |
Yes it is cold. |
Cool water bottle. Too bad I couldn't drink from it - frozen. |
A lot of people here look like Daffy! |
A short video showing that the seals are really alive.
